Biography

Jim Ladd is the last free form rock DJ in America, radio producer and writer. His show airs Monday-Friday at 8pm on 95.5 KLOS in Los Angeles.

Unlike most of his contemporaries whose playlists are strictly regulated and delegated, Jim personally selects every song he plays on his show. Station management gives him complete control over the show's content. He combines music with atmospheric sound samples and social commentary, often inviting listeners to participate on the air. Most of his music sets center around a theme or story-line.

Along with his nightly programs, Jim also features a show on Friday nights called "Theme of Consciousness". This show is built around listener's request for songs based on a single theme and plays songs that contain the theme word in either the title or lyric. Be sure to tune in to listen live on the web (click here for KLOS Streaming link) and participate in the show by posting your requests on Jim's MySpace page (www.myspace.com/JimLadd)

His second theme show is on Wednesday nights at midnight in which he performs an hour-long, uninterrupted segment called "Headsets"; a theme-based collage of music with one song leading into the next, incorporating sound effects, voiceovers, poetry and quotes from movies all relating to the theme of the evening. Jim refers to Headsets as "Theatre of The Mind" (Use of headphones is encouraged for enhanced listening pleasure).

Now Jim has joined forces with multi-intrumentalist, songwriter, producer Billy Sherwood to bring Headsets to an entirely new format. Chapter I: "Alone Out Here" is Jim's first in a series of musical concept creations now available on cd.

More About Jim

Jim began his career in 1969 at KNAC a rock oriented Long Beach station. In 1971 he moved to Los Angeles station KLOS. 1974 would find him leaving KLOS and joining KMET, a free form rock and roll format where he stayed through most of the 80's. At that time he was also hosting and producing Innerview, an hour-long nationally syndicated interview program.

Free form rock and roll all came to a screeching halt when the plug was pulled on KMET in 1987. With free form all but gone, there were very few options left in radio for free form deejays. Fortunately, for Jim, at about the time that KMET was pulled off the air, he got a call from his old friend Roger Waters of Pink Floyd fame to appear on Roger's second solo album "Radio K.A.O.S.". For the album, Jim played the part of the rebel DJ and performed this role for the world tour and MTV videos.

In 1991, Jim became a "real" DJ again on the classic rock station, KLSX. That same year, his book "Radio Waves" hit the bookstands. The book was written to both commemorate free form radio and recount how it came to an end.

His resume of hosting jobs boasts many of rock's biggest stars and events including world album premieres for: Tom Petty, Paul McCartney, Pink Floyd, The Doors, Don Henley, Roger Waters, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young and the Who, concerts for: Pink Floyd, Roger Waters, Tom Petty and The Who's 25th Anniversary of Tommy and world wide broadcasts of the 1990 Knebworth Festival in England and The Wall in Berlin.

1997 marked an important year for Jim and all free form radio aficionados when Jim once again returned to playing free form rock-and-roll nightly on KLOS. KLOS took on the noble deed of placing the only free form show in the country on the air. Where Jim rocks his legions of fans (affectionately known as "The Tribe") weeknights from 8pm-1am.

The years of dedication to his craft were acknowledged on May 6, 2005 when Jim received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame
